Highlight text on any page and find it again

Select a passage and click one of five colors. The highlight is saved, and when you open the page again it is back in place. Every highlight also lands in your library, where you can search them and group them by day or by site.

Quotes for writing

Researchers and writers collect key passages from articles and papers and give each color a meaning: sources, quotes, counter-arguments.

Long reads

Mark the paragraph that answered your question in a long article or a wiki page, and skim faster the second time.

What it does

  • colors

Yellow, green, pink, blue and purple. Give each one a meaning: facts, sources, questions, ideas.

  • Back on every visit

Each passage is found again from its text and the words around it, also when the site loads its text a moment later.

  • One library

Search across highlighted text, titles and addresses. Group by day, by site, or see one list.

  • Change or delete

Click a highlight on the page to pick another color or delete it. Select over an existing one and you edit it, with no double marks.

  • changes to the site

Marks are painted over the text by the browser, so the page's own code and layout are left alone.

  • permission

Storage, to keep your highlights. What you read and what you mark never leaves your browser.

Why highlights vanish when you reload a page

A browser forgets your selection the moment you click elsewhere. Chrome can make a link that highlights a passage (Copy link to highlight), but the mark appears only when someone opens that exact link, and it is never saved on your side.

Page Highlighter keeps each passage with the words around it, so it can find it again whenever you open the page, from a bookmark, your history or a search. If a site rewrites a passage so it no longer exists, the highlight stays in your library instead of on the page.

Your highlights stay with you

  • On your device

Everything is kept in your browser's local extension storage. No account, no cloud, no sync service.

  • Nothing leaves the browser

No analytics and no ads. The extension reads a page only to find your highlighted passages in it.

  • One permission

Storage, so your highlights are saved. It runs on the pages you read so you can mark them.

Questions

How do I highlight text on a web page in Chrome?

Add Page Highlighter to Chrome, select the text and click one of the five colors in the small toolbar that appears. The highlight is saved right away.

Do my highlights stay after I close the page?

Yes. They are saved per address, and the next time you open it they are painted back in place. If the site changes that passage, the highlight stays in your library.

Where can I see all my highlights?

Click the extension icon. A tab opens with every highlight you saved: search them, group them by day or by site, and follow the link back to the page.

How do I change a highlight's color or remove it?

Click the highlight on the page and the toolbar opens: pick another color or delete it. You can also delete highlights in the library.

Do my highlights sync between computers?

No. They are stored in this browser on this device. There is no account and no sync, which also means nobody else sees them.

Can I highlight text in a PDF?

No. It works on regular web pages, not on PDFs or Chrome's own pages.

Is it free? What does it collect?

It's free, with no account. It collects nothing: your highlights stay in your browser, and there are no analytics or ads.

Does it work in Edge, Brave or Opera?

Most Chromium browsers install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, including Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. Firefox and Safari are not supported.

Highlight any page. Still there next time.
